I remember being dragged into a lingerie shop by my mother about 20 years ago. I needed a black strapless bra for an evening dress she was making for me. I had never been fitted for a bra and had previously assumed that I hovered somewhere around the larger side of normal. ‘Normal’ was a B or a C cup. An A cup was two fried eggs and a D cup was Samantha Fox, page 3 model!
The Lingerie shop did not have a great selection and I think I left with a 38DD that closely resembled two riding hats that had been stitched together. As a consequence, the strapless dress was not the sexy low cut, screen siren number I had imagined. In order to cover up the bra it nearly came up to my chin!
My sister Heather, and I opened Sweet Dreams 16 years ago. We rightly assumed that we were not the only women walking around with the ‘4 boob’ look under a T-shirt. We were so uncomfortable; we were desperate to get our bras off at the end of the day, and not for any hanky panky! We went on a bra fitting course and discovered that we were part of the 9 out of 10 women wearing the wrong size and that there were in fact many more women who needed help and it was our job to do it.
We were in fact both a 34 FF. I have hovered around this size since late puberty (except during pregnancy and breast feeding, but that’s another blog subject!). Although, when I found out my true size, I felt like I needed counselling to deal with it!
At the time there was one company making bras up to a G cup. To be honest we were a little disappointed when the Eveden rep arrived and laid out her wares on the counter. There were 5 bras, but only 3 of them fitted on the counter at once. Put it this way, if I had jumped out of an aeroplane holding onto one I would have felt reasonably secure about my chances of survival!
But here we are now in a land of plenty for the big bosomed woman. Funnily enough, Eveden is still the market leader in designing larger cup bras at a reasonable price, and they don’t look anything like hammocks these days! The strange thing is that most of the well-endowed women out there are still uncomfortable because they have not been fitted for a bra. Fitting doesn’t just mean finding out your size, it is also understanding your shape and the styles of bra that suit your body, wardrobe and bank balance.
At Sweet Dreams we have learned from our customers about the problems faced by many women in the search for perfect fitting underwear. We have also tried and tested the endless solutions from the lingerie manufacturers. Of the 5 staff that work in our shop, 3 are over an F cup, so we also have first hand experience of big cup size issues! I wanted to share a few trade secrets and it is for this reason that I have started a blog.
Lets be honest, there are plenty of blogs out there discussing the latest super sexy A-C cup £500 a set La Perla styles and if you are the 10% of the population who is this size, with a bottomless bank balance or an extremely wealthy husband, then this blog is probably not for you.
I want to show the average woman how the right lingerie can do more than any diet or exercise program when you need to get into a little black dress that’s a bit too tight and the party is tomorrow night! How the right T-shirt bra means everyone will be looking at your lovely T-shirt and not the bra or even worse, your nipples underneath it! How a good fitting sports bra means a healthy body and a fun workout, not two black eyes and backache! I have seen a woman out for a run who was actually holding her boobs to stop them moving when she thought no one was watching.
These are the kind of subjects I would like to discuss and hopefully problem solve and the many more that you the reader would like looked into. Please feel free to comment, give me your experiences or suggest an area you would like discussed.
I hope you enjoy reading it.
